An introduction
I published this site a little while back. Early on I struggled with how to start off. I typed, deleted, retyped, revised and adjusted this initial post many times, wrestling with the content and how to present it.
The reason I’ve done this is simple. I’ve chosen a topic on
which to base this blog which, whilst simple enough to grasp as a concept, has
a depth to it that I know will likely be beyond my capability to ever fully
expound to you.
Why should you care?
There’s so much in this phrase which demands attention and
exposition. The best place I can think of to start is, however with a single
word “why”.
Why is it important for Christ to come back to the earth?
Why should it matter for the world and its inhabitants? Why should it matter to
you personally? The answer to the why is confronting.
Your life is finite.
You are a mortal, dying creature as a result of Adam’s sin
in Eden (Genesis 3 v 19). You have inherited from him a nature which, without
intervention, will lead sooner or later into the oblivion that comes with
death. If you are fortunate you may live what you consider to be a life rich in
experience. If you remain healthy, you may be able to extend your life to 80 or
90 years and be surrounded by family and friends alike. Men may celebrate you
in life and eulogise you after you pass.
The "afterlife" is a myth.
In death, your consciousness ceases. You will, however, be
unaware of everything that happens from the moment after you draw your last
breath. Dust you most assuredly are and you will most certainly return to this
state. The idea of an “afterlife” is nothing more than man’s feeble attempt to
shield this brutal truth from his eyes. No Christian worthy of the name should
entertain this idea because it is not taught in the scriptures. (We'll explore
this idea more later).
There is a way of escape
There is a way to escape this fate and it is connected with
the return of Christ to the earth. God has offered us an opportunity of a
never-ending (eternal) life through His Son, Jesus Christ.
For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is
eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6 v 23
In all ages from Adam to today, men and women have had the
opportunity to turn to God and hear His message of salvation. The Bible we hold
in our hands contains records of some who responded positively to this message.
Sadly, it also chronicles all too many who turned their backs on God’s gracious
words.
Death has overtaken all those who are written in the Bible
record. Yet the class who responded positively to God’s message died in hope
that death would not be the end of their story
For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall
stand at the latter day upon the earth: And though after my death worms destroy
this body, yet in my flesh shall I see God: Job 19 v 25 & 26
Job knew that he would stand before God. He knew that there
was an opportunity for something more and that he would stand, bodily,
physically, at a latter day to receive his redemption.
This latter day is the day of Christ’s coming back to this
earth. It is the day that the faithful throughout all ages have looked and
hoped for. It is the day whose coming I believe is imminent and should be the
sole focus of waking lives.
